His 1996 drama Jurassic Park III earned Oscar nominations for a few things: Bob Peck, who played an E.T.-like character named Doctor Grant, who had a whole episode of living-turtle drinking; and, of course, Robert Neville, who played the great American adventurer Dr. Ian Malcolm, who gave us those priceless lines, “Every day is Halloween at the Museum of Natural History.” Those lines appeared in their full glory in Jurassic Park III, but they were heard in the 1995 TV series The Lost World: Jurassic Park, before the film came out. John Oliphant, who directed both films, wrote those lines, which he said he’d been working on for years, in the novel he’d been developing before Jurassic Park III. So it’s ironic that, after Jurassic Park III, that book went unpublished for 10 years while Oliphant lived a somewhat quiet life as an editor. His new novel is called John Oliphant’s Tyrannosaur, and it’s the story of a man in a relationship with a tyrannosaur—basically, a stegosaurus. Oliphant’s older novel, writing about the late A.J. Marzo’s expedition to Mongolia to shoot the life-size Velociraptor puppet made for the original movie, doesn’t feature any dinosaur talk, but Oliphant grew up in a school where dinosaurs were part of the curriculum and he’s always been interested in them. His interest in dinosaurs led him to work on the film adaptations of Michael Crichton’s novels, including Jurassic Park. “I got really involved in trying to make this into a dinosaur movie,” he says. “It’s a shame it didn’t work out, but it was a very fascinating adventure.” Oliphant’s newest novel, Tyrannosaur, takes place in San Diego, where Marzo’s expedition found and shot the Tyrannosaurus rex puppet for the first Jurassic Park.
